A Purple Affair
In celebration of domestic violence survivors, the Still Standing Foundation is hosting a fashion show called "A Purple Affair."
Purple - the color for this cause in October, will feature poetry reading and a special live concert.
The founder, Tamiko Lowery, is also a survivor. She empowers others with her message of hope, endurance and strength. This celebration will showcase love, compassion, partnership and support. She created the foundation in an effort to be a resource for others after coming out of her own depression and sadness with a renewed spirit of passion and fervor.
The fashion show will feature twenty models who are actual survivors and will walk the run-way of freedom. For some, this is their first victory walk and their declaration that they are in fact a survivor of this troubling and often secretive epidemic. Teen girls who have experienced dating abuse will also take part and walk the run-way with women as a symbol of those who can encourage them and lead them to more fulfilling relationships with men. Lil G formerly of the R&B group Silk will perform and will also discuss the importance of respecting each other physically, mentally and spiritually in relationships.
Tamiko has been committed to this effort since 2009 and has had much success with sponsors and supporters along the way. For this event, Cinderella's Closet, Fabulous Life Boutique, La'Femme Boutique, Bling by Kisha Nicole and Odds Design are providing fashions and accessories. She has also been able to promote this event and the cause on the Chat Kafe' with Kenny Pugh where she is the entertainment and marketing correspondent. Each Monday she provides information about this issue in addition to current events in and around Atlanta. Outside of the show and work, she counsels with women who need advice and has assisted on a help line for several years.
This year the event will be at 595 North Avenue; Event and Venue Lounge in Atlanta. Tickets are $25. All proceeds will go to the Survivor Start Up Fund that provides assistance for victims who need to escape their situations immediately but may not be able to do so do lack of funds. The fund provides money for living arrangements: security deposits, first months rent, groceries, utilities, and more.
Guests and attendees for this year's event will receive special gifts bags filled with goodies from sponsors and vendors.
